What the clinican need to know about awake and sleep bruxism – from epidemiology and etiology to assessment and management of consequenies.

This lecture will provide an overview of current knowledge on awake and sleep bruxism based on recent research and how this can be used by clinicians in their day-to-day practice.

Dr. Birgitta Häggman-Henrikson, Orofacial pain specialist (DDS) and Professor

Birgitta Häggman-Henrikson graduated from Umeå University in Sweden in 1987. She worked as a general dentist in the the Public Dental health followed by a PhD at Umeå University in 2004. She then worked in private practice in England before returning to Sweden and Malmö University in 2014. Birgitta is now a full time professor and Senior Consultant at the Department of Orofacial Pain and Jaw Function where she combines teaching with research and clinical work. Her research is focused on chronic orofacial pain, jaw function, and bruxism, and the connection between pain in the jaw and neck region, including symptoms after whiplash trauma.

Dr. Nikola Stanisic, General dentist (DDS) and Double PhD candidate

Nikola Stansic graduated as a dentist in 2020 from Malmö University, Sweden. After graduation, Nikola began working halftime at the Department of Orofacial Pain and Jaw Function at the same university and in the Public Dental Health services in Skåne. In 2021, Nikola embarked on a double PhD program, a collaborative project between Malmö University and Aarhus University, Denmark, focusing on the relationship between pain, function, and parafunction in the jaw system.
