This lecture was held in QAdental Forum 2022 Restorative dentistry theme and it is the fifth and last lecture of the webinar series Restoration of worn and decayed dentition with direct techniques. The lecturer is professor dr. Gerry McKenna. The lecture fee is provided by GC.

 

Lecture content

During this lecture, Gerry will discuss the management of root caries in older adults including:

1. The changing patterns in oral health amongst older adults

2. The challenges of preventing and managing caries in older adults

3. The application of the Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) to caries management in older patients

Lecturer Gerry McKenna biography

Gerry McKenna qualified as a dentist at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom.  After working in a number of dental hospitals and spending time in dental practice he completed his PhD and specialist clinical training in University College Cork.  He currently works as a Consultant in Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry in Queens University Belfast where he provides clinical supervision and teaching for undergraduate and postgraduate dental students. His clinical work is focused on fixed and removable prosthodontics including managing older adults in both hospital and private practice. 

Gerry is a clinical researcher based within the Centre for Public Health in Queens University Belfast where he leads oral health research.  He is the current President of the Geriatric Oral Research Group of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and past President of the European College of Gerodontology (ECG).  His research is centered on optimizing treatment options for older adults which positively impact their dental and overall health.

Gerry is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, an adjunct Professor in University College Cork and a King James IV Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. 

He has recently published the book “Clinical Cases in Gerodontology”.
